Assessment

At Newnham St Peter’s, we believe that assessment is a key part of high-quality teaching and learning. It helps us understand each child’s progress, celebrate achievements, and plan next steps, so every pupil can flourish.

Ongoing Assessment

Assessment of children’s progress is continuous and woven into everyday teaching. Teachers carefully observe, question, and assess pupils in a range of ways, including:

  • Marking and reviewing work

  • Discussions and verbal feedback

  • Observations during lessons

  • End-of-unit tasks and quizzes

Staff use this information to adapt their teaching, plan next steps, and ensure that every child’s learning journey is purposeful and personalised.

We keep clear records of progress across the curriculum and provide children with timely feedback to help them grow in confidence and independence. In Key Stage 2, children are supported to set learning and performance targets, encouraging them to take ownership of their progress and strive for their personal best.

Statutory Assessments

In addition to everyday teacher assessments, children at Newnham St Peter’s take part in national assessments at key stages:

  • Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA)
Taken within the first six weeks of starting school to establish a starting point for future progress.

  • Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
A short assessment to check phonic knowledge. Children who do not meet the expected level may retake it in Year 2.

  • Key Stage 1 SATs (Year 2)
Standardised assessments in reading, writing, and maths. These help us measure progress and identify next steps.

  • Multiplication Tables Check (Year 4)
A national online check to assess times tables fluency up to 12 × 12.

  • Key Stage 2 SATs (Year 6)
Assessments in reading, maths, and grammar, punctuation & spelling (GPS). Writing is assessed by teachers.

These assessments help us reflect on children’s learning and ensure we are providing the right support at the right time.
