Curriculum

Cherish everyone, flourish together, and serve others.

Rooted in the eternal values of faith, hope and love (1 Corinthians 13:13), we believe every child is created in the image of God, with unique gifts and the potential to grow. Our curriculum is designed to nurture every child spiritually, academically, emotionally and socially, preparing them to live life in all its fullness (John 10:10).

Our Curriculum Is:
  • Knowledge-rich and coherent – Building on prior learning from EYFS onwards, with clear progression and deepening understanding across all subjects.
  • Rooted in Christian values – Promoting justice, forgiveness, perseverance, kindness, and humility through everything we teach, model and celebrate.
  • Joyful and purposeful – Learning is brought to life through big questions, visits, visitors, experiences, and connections to the wider world and God’s story.
A Curriculum That Cherishes, Flourishes and Serves

At Newnham St Peter’s, we believe that every child deserves access to meaningful, challenging learning. That’s why our curriculum follows a “low threshold, high ceiling” approach—creating a learning environment that is both inclusive and ambitious.

This directly reflects our vision:

Cherish Everyone

Every child can access the learning and feel valued from the start, regardless of their starting point.

Low Threshold – Inclusive by Design
We start from the belief that every child is loved by God and deserves full access to rich, meaningful learning. Tasks are designed to be clear, welcoming and accessible to all learners, including those with SEND, EAL, or other additional needs.

We achieve this through:

  • Carefully chosen entry points that spark engagement and build confidence
  • High-quality scaffolding (e.g. Widgit visuals, sentence stems, and peer collaboration)
  • Strong focus on vocabulary and pre-teaching of key concepts

This reflects the faith we hold in each child’s God-given worth and potential. To cherish everyone means not just allowing participation, but actively designing learning so that everyone belongs and everyone can succeed.

Flourish Together

Children are encouraged to think deeply, ask big questions, and develop their full God-given potential in the community.

High Ceiling – Challenge for All
While all children access the core learning, our curriculum builds in opportunities for depth, creativity, and extended thinking. Children are supported to:

  • Explore big questions about the world, faith, and human experience
  • Tackle challenging problems with independence, reasoning, and resilience
  • Make meaningful links across subjects through discussion, drama, art, and reflection

This is where we see children truly flourishing together—not racing ahead, but growing in wisdom, confidence, and collaboration. It reflects our commitment to hope: that every child can go further than they ever imagined, supported by a loving and inspiring community.

Serve Others

Learning is never just for ourselves. Through collaborative learning and open-ended tasks, children are encouraged to use their knowledge and skills in ways that serve and bless others.

Learning That Leads to Love in Action
Because our curriculum is rooted in purpose and Christian values, pupils are empowered to:

  • Explain ideas clearly and generously to others
  • Reflect on moral, ethical and spiritual questions with empathy
  • Apply learning to real-world challenges—through school council, eco-action, collective worship, or social justice projects

This is love in action, as taught in 1 Corinthians 13: “the greatest of these is love.” We want our children not only to know more, but to be more—faith-filled, thoughtful, and compassionate individuals who live out their learning for the good of others.

Examples in Practice

  • In History, all children might explore the core narrative through storytelling and visuals (low threshold), while others analyse sources, bias and impact (high ceiling).
  • In RE, all pupils may engage with a parable or story at a basic level, while deeper layers of discussion explore theological meaning, symbolism, and personal interpretation.
  • In Science, everyone may participate in an experiment, but some pupils go on to form hypotheses, analyse results, or connect learning to issues of stewardship and ethical responsibility.

What Difference It Makes

Every child at Newnham St Peter’s is:

  • Cherished – Their voice, needs, and individuality are valued.
  • Flourishing – Their minds, hearts, and characters are nurtured.
  • Equipped to serve – They are confident, compassionate learners, ready to make a difference in God’s world.

“Low threshold, high ceiling” is not just a teaching strategy. At Newnham, it is a Christian expression of faith, hope and love in action.

Our Curriculum Helps Children Grow:

  • In wisdom – with deep subject knowledge, articulate vocabulary, and curiosity to explore the world God has made.
  • In hope – with confidence, resilience, and a growth mindset rooted in knowing they are loved and capable.
  • In dignity – with moral courage, spiritual insight, and a desire to do what is right.
  • In community – with compassion for others, a sense of belonging, and a heart for service.

The Newnham Difference

Every child is seen, known, and celebrated at Newnham St Peter’s.
They leave us ready not only for the next stage of education, but for a life of meaning, contribution, and joy—ready to live life in all its fullness, aspiring, believing, and achieving together.
